Tricep Extension

Description

Tricep extensions build strength in the triceps. This can aid in more difficult compound pushing exercises like bench press and overhead press.

Primary Muscles Involved

Procedure

Engaging the triceps involves an eccentric motion of the arm. Tricep extensions can be done with machines or weights. The standard version is done with a cable.

  1. Attach a bar or rope to a cable set at the highest position. Select a difficult weight.
  2. Step forward so your elbows remain at your side, not out front.
  3. Pull the bar or rope downward, keeping your elbows stationary.

Variations

The variations of tricep extension target different parts of the tricep.

Overhead Extension

This variation has a similar arm movement. However, the position requires the arms to be above the head, and the person to face outwards from the cables.
